I’m not sure if this is a fix or not, but it’s worth a shot anyway. By default, Windows 7 (and possibly Vista) have a power configuration for Selective USB Sleep states. It will power down “unused” USB ports. Again, I don’t know if this will fix your issue, but you can try and let me know, as I do not have one of these headsets.

Go To:

Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change Plan Settings (for whatever currently selected plan it is, defaults to “balanced”) > Change advanced power settings (it’s a hyperlink underneath the rollouts for “turn off display” and “put the computer to sleep”) > USB Settings > USB selective suspend setting > Disabled

Click OK.

Hopefully that will work, otherwise I have no idea what would cause this outside of a problem with the product itself. In which case it really is Razer’s fault (but it still could be since I would assume Razer’s drivers could actually override this ability).

Fortunately (and unfortunately) Razer allegedly admitted to the issues with the Razer Megalodon, and have given no date as to when it will be fixed.

I will keep this post updated with responses from Razer support or anyone else though for those who are looking for a fix.

I use a pair of Digitech earphones that don’t actually belong to me. They probably cost less than R100 and have slightly inferior sound quality to the Razor Megalodon… but at least they can play a song that is longer than 1 minute ;)

I have this problem as well.

I have also learned a few things about this headset along the way. For example the G15 logitech keyboard and megalodon headset do NOT get along very well, The G15 takes up far to much USB bandwidth to make the G15 very happy. I purchased a PCI-USB card, and that seemed to solve my bandwidth issue.

However I am still having problems with random audio loss. It seems that this rarely happens while running audio in windows (Listening to music, watching movies et cetera) but it does happen. My main issue is while running games. at times I will be gaming for hours, and have no audio loss, other times it will happen within the hour, and when I unplug/replug in the megalodon, i will get another almost immediate audio loss.

I also have noticed that I cannot get true 7.1 surround in most of my games, Pretty much any game that runs on the source engine (left4dead, l4d2, cs:s, TF2, et cetera) Also with call of duty 4, and call of duty MW2. However COD:World at war works freakin’ perfect with 7.1 audio(It actually has an option for 7.1 sound, and COD4 and MW2 only have 5.1 or ‘use windows default’)

I have talked to Razer about all of these problems, and they just tell me that they are ‘working on it’. However when it comes to getting 7.1 audio in source games, they have no clue.

BTW im running Windows7 X64. Im debating on reformatting to windows vista64. If anyone out there has done this, let me know :D

All the issues you are experiencing are widely shared by everyone else using 64 bit Windows 7…

I can’t be 100% sure that its the same on 32 bit, although the Razer Megalodon firmware update does include a 32 bit version… the update seemed to only prolong the time it takes for the headset to cut out for me – but maybe you should try it too.

I have the same gaming issues, and in the same games. It’s clearly some sort of USB power usage issue, as the Megalodon external sound processor gets very hot to the touch before it shuts down. This is probably because of the massive amount of input and output experienced mainly during gaming (and ofcourse the way Windows 7 is now handling that).

I have “apparently” reached the second level of support with Razer (after sending a couple of very angry emails), but since my ticket has been escalated – I have yet to hear from them. I will keep this updated on that.

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I have had Vista (not 64bit) and can honestly say I wasn’t all that impressed with performance and the system’s micro management. Other than that, I am pleased with Windows 7, and from the many posts I have seen, Vista is also plagued with the same problems regarding the Razer Megalodon, so I wouldn’t put my money on it working :|

I have used the firmware update for the 64bit version. I doubt that this is a heat related issue, if it was we would be seeing a higher failure rate after the first audio loss.

I have also just tried Zedman’s recommendation, and I got an audio loss after about 45mins of playing left4dead2. But something kinda funny happened. Instead of unplugging my headset from the USB port, and reconnection it, I simple changed the audio settings in game(From 5.1 to 7.1, and back to 5.1) As soon as the round ended and loaded the next stage, I had sound again(Even the music that i was playing through lastFM came back) a little odd, but it may shed some light on things for razer.

I have also tried the Powered USB hub, I actually got really bad audio from using it, and still experienced audio loss.

Its starting to look like the only thing we can do now is simply wait for razer to find the problem and release another firmware update. Who knows how long that could take.

After I installed the firmware some weeks ago, I found nothing but what seems like and extra 30 minutes before the Megalodon cuts out. I have read a number of forum posts about it being a possible over heating issue (perhaps due to insufficient or poor power management), but I can’t say for sure… my Megalodon gets pretty hot, and when it cuts out – I find its at its hottest.

In Left 4 Dead 2 when the new level loads, the audio hardware is likely reset for the new section in the game, its definitely not due to Zedman’s suggestion, as I have had that since the first time I noticed the cutting out. Apparently a powered USB hub should solve the issue, but there have been reports of it not working at all for some people – which leads me to believe the USB hubs have some paticular design difference that allows (perhaps more power) for the Megalodon to work properly.

Razer are apparently aware of the issue, and I can only imagine that they are biting their nails trying to fix this issue (maybe finding it may not be possible without a hardware return) and losing tons of cash…

All the source engine games suffer sound cuts just randomly in other games there is no problem.
The most disappoiting thing is the mic impressive STATIC NOISE with the old FW the mic works perfec.It seams Razer brings us 20 extra minutes without cutting but take us the mic quality.

Hi Affonso,

You need to hold down the snake button while inserting the Megalodon USB cable into the pc. Then when the “new hardware detected” message appears, click on it and manually choose the folder in which you want it to look for the drivers (obviously the firmware updater files you got from Razer here).

I had high hopes for Zedman’s USB power change fix but after doing it and playing for the last two hours I’ve had two cutouts. For me it seems like it’s application related because I can quit to my desktop where the sound is still working, reload the game (Dragon Age) and the sound immediately works again. It’s not just that game though, any application it’ll die after a while but always seems to be working out in the desktop area. Haven’t tried the mic out a lot but did get that to work after turning sens all the way down and input levels really low. Hope something gets done soon, I really like the headset otherwise.

I have also tried Zedman’s idea, didn’t have any luck with that either. And yes, turning the mic WAY down does help with the terrible static on the other end – but it’s definitely not a solution to the issue, and actually makes me far more annoyed…

After causing some noise in the Razer support inbox – I have finally received a somewhat better response from them. The email confirmed their knowledge of the issues, and the lack of any estimate on a date for a fix:

“As you know we are currently working with Microsoft on a solution that will resolve the issue the Megalodon is having with Vista 64 and Win 7 64 bit systems, but with this being said, we are unable to commit any release dates for the solution.
Do rest assured that we are working very hard to get this done in the shorted possible time.”

And to probably make me feel all warm inside, they asked if I would perform some useless tests, and get back to them (surely they can afford their own Windows 7 copy!?)

“Let’s try this out: go to Control Panel, Hardware and sounds, Change System Sounds, Recording, then select Razer Megalodon under Microphone, Click Properties, then Level. What is the Microphone level here? Try changing the level up a notch (level by level) starting with 0 up to 30. Please let us know if this resolves static issue. And if this resolves the issue, please let us know the mic level that you have set.”

If this is the level of testing these guys are sitting at, I fear we may never see a fix for the Megalodon… :|

…p.s The Megalodon is made by the quality assuring company in California that all our support mails are reaching… have a look on the bottom of your external case and read… the writing on the bottom says “made in China”… go figure :)

I just downgraded to Vista 64 from Windows7x64, Although I have not put a lot of time into testing the audio loss issue, I have noticed that my mic is working perfectly. No more static here, Everything is turned up to max and it sounds perfect.

I’ll let you know if I experience any audio loss while in Vista.

Hopefully we’ll be getting an update soon, so I wont be stuck using crappy Vista forever.

The issues are consistent on Windows 7 and Vista 64 bit. Although – I have seen a number of reports of the same issues with the Megalodon on 32 bit as well.

Hi again guys.Few updates by me i have installed the Vista 32Bit and the static noise is ther but much more aceptable like a normal crappy mic.And for one day i grab my Megalodons to show them to my friend he use XP 32bits and the mic have a cristal clear quality like before i update my FW to the actual 2.7.Obviosly i dont wanna install XP and 32BITS the cause is simple i have only a laptop and doesnt have a desktop PC and that means is to hard to find drivers for this kind of systems 3264Nts XP/Vista/7 7>all no driver problems only megalodon!!!

I hope they are working to solve the problem,cuz this summer may i ll go to vacations to California to kill someone form Razer :P

I just got my Megalodon this week and I am terribly disappointed by it. Windows 7 is pretty much amazing compared to Vista and not being able to use the otherwise awesomely designed headset is a tragedy. Sadly, there is nothing we can do about it but to search for a more reliable product and return the Razer one while it’s still possible.

Today I recieved yet another “try it yourself testing” mail from Razer Support :pissedoff: . This time they wanted me to check my sound settings in windows 7 64 bit. They had a theory that the advanced settings ” allow applications to take exclusive control over this device” and “give exclusive mode applications priority” would help the sound cutting problem, and also the mic static noise issue.

As I already have played around with these settings before, I was not surprised that it didn’t work this time either.

Starting to get really pissed. I mean, after months of mailing with Razer, and several requests from them to me asking me to try out several things, it seems that they are not even close finding the solution to this problem.

I am not-a-proud owner of Megalodon for two months already. I am an experienced PC user (ex System Administrator), and I thought I will handle this issues by myself. Not a chance. Tried everything, even the trick with USB power settings. Anyway.

After the update, all I have is a nice pair of not working headset. Because, for me, something that cost me €150 and work BADLY for an hour = not working. Sadly, I live in Bulgaria and there is not a Razer representative. There are couple of dealers that “don’t know what to do”. No money back.

Sadly, I bought the Razer Mako, just a week before the firmware upgrade, because I had hope that with it, I won’t have any problems. Too bad for me. Mako is nice, but – I don’t know why – there is not so rare audio distortion and cut-off sometimes. Same as Megalodon.

My audio card is Creative X-FI Extreme Music with the latest Creative drivers for Windows 7 64 bit. *Sometimes* when I change mode from game to entertainment, I have the sound back, but for few minutes only. Don’t know if someone else have the same problem, but think before buy more Razer products. They’re just a great design and nothing more.

Oh, and something more – even in 5.1 or 7.1 games, when I use Megalodon as surrond, the sound is trash! It’s like I put my head in a can.

I will follow this article for further information and, of course, if i found a solution (which I doubt, not without Razer’s dev. support), I’ll post here.

You’re definitely not alone, and all the strange cutting out and problems with the Razer Megalodon in game / swapping to entertainment modes and all the things you have described are exactly as I am experiencing it. Like many others I have received plenty of mails from Razer (some real and some copy & pasted) that were all useless, and pretty much insulting from even the slightest technical stand point.

If anyone finds a solution, post it here for the rest of us… until then, enjoy using some other headset :sad:

I have recently acquired an external powered usb hub. And I have found it does fix the headsets audio output – EXCEPT, the mic still continues to give an annoying buzz compared to its once amazing sound on XP… :sad:

And so – we are still waiting for a fix… merry christmas!

Just switched from Vista-64 to Win7-64 hoping that my Megalodon issues would be a thing of the past. Immediately noticed how god-awful the sound quality on the mic was and have had to turn down mic sensitivity and mic level just to be able to speak without the white noise. I haven’t had any crashes but then I haven’t gamed yet. It was much, much better quality in Vista. I was always very impressed with how clear the Megalodon was but it sounds like garbage now.

The fix for switching from 7.1 to 5.1 and back again used to work fine for L4D1 but unfortunately in the sequel it kills the voicecom support, requiring a restart of the game anyway to restore sound.

How much did your external powered usb hub cost? I can deal with the mic buzz, I just can’t stand the headphones cutting out!

Hehe – but its built into a shiny new g19 keyboard. Unfortunately this is definitely not a solution, it just stops the headset from cutting out all together… (so far)

Okay, ‘good’ to hear all the responses. I also have a Megalodon. Imported it myself from the USA, because it was not in Europe yet. Worked perfect on XP and on Win7 64b I got the same troubles like anyone else.

However I managed to fix most issues (with some workaround). What I did was the following:
-Install the latest firmware. This will decrease the mic quality drastically, but I come to that later.
-Buy a powered USB hub. I know not everyone want to buy one. However, mail Razer that this solved your problem and you will get a 20 euro check to spent at the Razer online store (or burn the check in a ritual way, that will give you also some relieve :P ).

To solve the mic quality:
-In windows decrease mic recording level to 20% of max (or even a little bit less).
-Decrease on razer control unit ‘Mic sens’ to zero.
-Decrease on razer control unit ‘Mic level’ to 4 or 5 bars.
-Do some minor tweaking in Teamspeak (shout/whisper bar)

Quality was now good accoording to my friends online.

I do have some question. A friend of mine has also the Megalodon and has the same problems as me lately. However if he is using the powered usb hub, his sound gets every few seconds (10?) a ‘tick’. Does anyone of you have this same problem while using a powered usb hub. To be honest I do not know if he used his G19 or a seperate device.

I think we need to inventorize what everybody has done and what the problems are.
So please all of you fill in the following scheme:

-Operating System (also 32/64 bit)
-Do you use a powered USB hub (please state brand also). If possible do not use the G19 powered usb, but a seperate device
-Firmware flashed to latest?
-Short description of problem.
-Did my solution for improving the mic quality AFTER FW flash worked for you?

My main question is: Is there a relation with the FW update and the powered usb hub. In other words, does the powered usb hub only works after the FW update.

Further more there are 2 ‘secret’ functions on the Megalodon:

1: Equalizer: One is by pressing the middle top button (I forgot the name) for over 10 seconds.
Resetting this options can be done by holding the central button for over 10 seconds.

2″ See what speaker gives sound: Press the bottom center button for over 10 seconds.
Again central button will reset this feature.

I have done similar things to my settings (lowering volumes and changing software i/o levels) which also helped mend the situation somewhat, but should we really have to do this as it doesnt fix anything, it just softens the harsher noises produced by the mic.

I have heard reports of powered USB hubs not working, but perhaps people are not using efficient (or powered) USB hubs to support the Megalodon’s most likely power hungry needs. I say this because the compatibility issues have only begun to occur in games or listening to constant audio action in loud music (such as that of most games that I play).

My system is Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate – I have ofcourse tried your suggested solution, and as stated above its not going to hold up for me, I have to turn all inputs for the mic on the OS and the hardware to absolute minimal which is just unnacceptable considering the cash you pay for this device.

When my g19 powered usb ports gave new hope for the Megalodon not cutting out, it was a let down to find out my mic has still got a constant droning static in the background when chatting online :sad: I can’t say I have experienced a “tick” noise, I will let you know if I notice anything.

I don’t know for sure, but I think it is possible that before the firmware update I had normal good mic quality, sadly we can’t down-grade… if I could – I would have a working Megalodon…

I used a powered USB hub before the firmware upgrade, and can confirm that it also worked then. The sound didn’t cut out. I had no issues with my mic before the firmware upgrade. Although using a powered usb hub solves the sound cutting problem, I feel the sound quality is not as good as when using the onboard usb ports. Every now and then I too experience a “tick/cracling” sound when using the powered usb hub, as if the sound is about to break. This does not happen when using the onboard usb ports.

Hi all I have tried taking my megalodon apart to stop possible overheating issue I thought this fixed problem (I even tried pointing a fan at it) however I still lost sound at random times.

I also tried using a decent powered USB hub but got same problems

Thats with old and new firmware.. Never really had any major issues with the mic.

I feel dissapointed. I really wanted this headset so badly for christmas, and now I can’t even use it 20 minuts. It’s sad that they do nothing to fix it, but more sad is, that I’m not sure how I can return it.

I love it when it works, just sad it doesn’t work for long time.

Unknown xD.If you have the original firmware then your microphone works fine?If is this way you can buy a power HUB to solve the sound cut problems maybe!!!You are not obligated and it may work may not,or just wait for a new FW or return the headset wathever you want the choise is yours.

Im not having the mic problems, and I can’t afford a power HUB. I’m feeling left by Razer, and their support.

@ Unknown: But you are you using the mic? Because only the ‘other party’ will hear if the mic sounds crap or not. So you should ask your friends if they can hear you (in a normal way).

@ SUIZ: Try to take the steps I have described in my post earlier. Maybe this will help to (at least) improve the quality of the mic.

maybe someone can help me out here:
i have a problem with my megalodon and don’t know whose fault it is.
if i watch a movie in 5.1 -> surround is fine/perfect/flawless
batman arkham asylum, hl2ep2, prototype -> surround is fine/perfect/flawless
mass effect, dragon age, the witcher -> metallic effect when setting my megalodon to 7.1 sound, so the game either gives me only stereo output or something else is wrong. how to find out what’s wrong here?

“metallic effect”? – are you comparing this to a prior 7.1 sound experience with your Megalodon where it didnt sound like that?

I can honestly say, I have never really been wildly impressed with the 7.1 surround sound, and 90% of the time revert to stereo – I’m assuming the games I’m playing or media I’m viewing haven’t truly utilized the channels to support the sound properly… it really just sounds more strange than better to me… :confused:

Perhaps someone else has an opinion?

watch any movie (which has only 2.0 audio) in 7.1 mode and you’ll get a “sound heard through a metal can”-effect. this is happening because the megalodon is upmixing the audio. the result is probably what you experienced as strange. if the audio source is 5.1 or 7.1, you should get a good result. try a game that (really) supports 7.1 sound like batman arkham asylum or use listen to the demo from razer (i don’t have a link, but it should be easy to find using google).

BTW i am talking seriously with the tech support and they ask me to send a record samle counting to 10…but the thing is going bad no pessimisum… I am seng Megalodon users using XP in 2020!!!

Heh… Im currently using Megalodon on two systems. One is Win7 64bit and second is Mac OS X Leopard. Never-ever have any problems on Leopard (or after instaling win7 – WinXP). This all cutoff and mic probs maybe are caused by crappy architecture of Windows code? … Look at vista then think that 7 is like “vista + XP”.

I can listen itunes on win7 all day long and never got prob with cutoff, but when I listen music and playing game then all magic starts. Also when I leave win7 on for long time then jump to the game its most liklely to cutoff. Yeah on Win7 on Leopard (or winXP) cutoff problems doesn’t exist.
Just wait till windows learn how to optimize their operating systems…. yeah this will take ages. Look at begining of windowsXP, how long it took to optimize it. 3x service packs? ^.^’ :s

Try playing a game without music… unless there is some divine intervention, I am certain just the game will be enough to trip the Megalodon.

Megalodon’s compatibility with Windows 7 and Vista is not the issue, because we all make mistakes, it’s the fact that we aren’t given any solution and so far seem to be left literally in the dark on this one – Razer have not given any major press release or indication that they are nearing a fix or will ever fix the issues for that matter… it’s a pretty huge deal considering the price tag.

It more likely cutoff when using more than 2 sound sources or system was ON in standby for several hours. Fun part that on others of my systems Headset works flawless for me whatever im trying to do to crash it.
When im playing only hgame without music it dosen’t fix problem. eg. CounterstrikeSource is best for triping Megalodon (my record was restart win7, opening CSS and joing server – bah… sound cutoff). On warsow.net it can stand a very long time sometimes even few matches and still on. O.o

Still it is sad that compatibility with win7 and vista is crap… Microsoft and Razer flagship products. I bet its half of Razer and half of Microsoft error.
(it is not first time when i have problems with Razer and Vista/Win7 – same was with mouse drivers: acidentally drivers crashes, switching off sens and acceleration on Razer Lachesis and one fun priblem with digital signed drviers for lachesis on 64 bit vista… That was my major deal to go back to WinXP – heh still same rule WinXP > Windows. Fun part that Windows is not that cheap. Well I bet we are suppoused wait for few servicepacks and hotfixes from Razer… But when it will be, i bet that another Windows will come out and new pair of headset comes to the market. :) They should focus on this problem considering price tag of Windows and Megalodons. :)

i figured out what the cause of my “metallic effect” was. it seems there is 5.1, 7.1, 2.0 and “directsound3d microsoft whatever”. it kinda works, but defies the 5.1/7.1-standard. for example, in 5.1/7.1, the not-3d-dialog is supposed to come out only of the center speaker. in dragon age, the witcher and so on, it comes out of every single one of my speakers. this works for a real 5.1-system, but not for the megalodon. it doesn’t understand what the input means and simply upmixes it despite it shouldn’t – the only solution is to go down to 2.0 :( why doesn’t the megalodon support 4.0, 5.1 AND 7.1 upmixing?

oh btw, i too suffer from the cutoff – every 3 hours. alt+tab out of the game, go into the windows sound settings switch to recording devices and back – sounds works again.
it may be just random, but the cutoff seems to happen more rare if i put the “maelstrom-box” on a cold metal plate, so it might actually be a heat problem in my case.

I have some tip when you re playing source engine game and the sound cut unplug and plug the Megalodons again and witch betwean 5.1 and 7.1 this will fix it but the good thing comes if your sound cuts again just have to switch again betwean 5.1 and 7.1.

replugging also works, yes. alt+tab is a lot faster in my case for almost every game (12gb ram ;), so there’s no swapping)

Heating is not problem for me… Since I tested it under WinXP and Mac’s Leopard.

Alt+tab and off-on trick works pretty well.

Most strange thing is I closed ventrilo and sound was back. While in most cutoffs I was suppoused to exit all programs that uses sound (Game, iTunes and Ventrilo) to turn sound off. Its more of random error… It may be hard work to predict what is the cause of it. :p Every week something diffrent happens, hah.

Well I don’t think heating is a problem. Bear in mind that the Megalodon works without the sound cut off issue when using a powered usb hub. The mic is still bad though. With this in mind I wonder if it really comes down to a power issue when using the onboard usb? I’m just guessing. It is really strange that the sound cut off issue is gone when using a powered usb hub, while it will occur very often using onboard usb… I wonder if the Razer team are in dialog with Microsoft on these issues. It is clearly that the Megalodon was not properly tested with Vista 64 bit or Windows 7 beta 64 bit. How hard can it be to design som proper firmware/drivers, they have known about this issue for about 5 months now. I’m starting to believe we are left in the dark on this one. Too bad really, because when it works, the Razer Megalodon is a great pair of gaming headset.

Some poeple obviously did not read my previous post.. The powered USB fix DOES NOT work for everybody.. Also I proved that the Megalodon does not overheat months ago by taking it apart and directly cooling it with a fan.

Try the following.

Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Edit Plan Settings > Changed Advanced Power Settings

USB Settings > USB Selective suspend Setting > Disable

USB Selective suspend settings worked for me to lenghten working time, it cutoffs much less now. But it still happening.

Guess only one fix at the moment now is to trash out win7/vista and install winXP. -.-

Some updates by Microsoft the Windows 7 SP1 beta is near to fall i hope they fix something with the USB s or wathever is the Megalodon problem.

Sounds promising… lets see if it was Microsofts fault after all…

(FYI: I’m running Vista64)

I gave up my Barracuda AC-1 and Headphones when I got this thing, and, to be honest, that was hard as hell because the sound from those two together was PERFECT. In fact, if Razer made a PCI-E version of the AC-1, I would have gone that route instead. I had to replace the AC1 because my new MoBo (ASUS P6T6) only has PCI-E slots.

So, I’ve been pretty motivated to make this damn thing work.

That said, I can’t say that this will *definitely* fix issues, but I was about ready to toss my Megalodon’s out the window until I poked around the resource map and found that the Megalodon’s sound system takes up around 70% of the USB bandwidth. Now, given the fact that I also use pretty much everything Razer for peripherals (Tarantula KB, Mamba mouse), and I have a USB network adapter, I realized that I have a lot of data going across my on-board controller.

A lot of people think that each port on a motherboard has it’s own controller.

This is not the case.

In fact, most motherboards have one USB controller running the whole show; a very few high-end boards have two covering as many as 12 USB ports.

As soon as I realized this was the case, I went out and picked up a SIIG USB3 controller, and dropped it in the system. I went with USB3 for 2 reasons: (1) I knew it would be prudent to have USB3 at some time anyway, and (2), by installing a USB3 PCI-E adapter, I was guaranteed that the controller for that card would handle any USB requests for the devices on the card.

After doing that, things got a lot better. I did, however, get 1 dropout in CoD MW2 after 3 hours.

Getting insanely ticked off, I decided to go last ditch and see what tweaking MW2 audio would do—I switched from “Use Windows” to “5.1 speakers” and I haven’t had a problem since. I’ve left my machine on with Teamspeak3 running for days without a glitch.

So, I guess I’d have to say that whatever this problem is, it’s exacerbated by:

1. Forcing all USB traffic through one controller, and
2. Using “windows default” for driving the sound in games.

Adding a second USB card and switching to 5.1 (or 7.1 if the game supports it), seems to have made the problem go away.

Now, that said, I don’t believe the average user should have to spend hours of time and $60 on controller cards to figure this out, so I do say “shame on Razer” for not warning of this issue with 64-bit OSes, and “Shame on Microsoft” for screwing up the Audio Engine APIs between 32 and 64-bit versions of their OSes.

Please note, that while these fixes worked for me, I **DO NOT** warrant that it will fix everyone’s issue on every hardware setup. My own personal observations are that the issue has to do with traffic jams across the USB channels, and for some reason, the 32-bit code handles things better than the 64 bit.

Go figure.

Thanks for the full run down of your situation, I think this gives a very clear overview, and I couldnt agree more with your findings. The situation is definitely more on the USB level than something as simple as a power issue. As well, its clear that this is the 64 bit cross over for Vista & 7 and the new way it’s handling the devices considering it works on 32bit systems. What would be very interesting is if anyone has a 64 bit XP that could confirm that the issues with the Megalodon are there…???

Lets hope that Microsoft have realized the issues and perhaps the next Windows 7 Service Pack will solve all our problems.

As much as I’d love to be able to do the easy thing and point a finger at poor hardware design, it does seem like a 32 vs 64 bit issue, and even MS acknowledges the fact that many drivers get broken in 64-bit. Ad windows treats this as a generic USB sound device, we’re left to the mercy of MS in a lot of ways.

And we all know where that usually leaves us :/

I have XP 64 somewhere…I never thought of giving your suggestion a try. Maybe I’ll set up a partition if time allows to give it a whirl.

Yes, if you do that would be great… we can pretty securely put the last nail in the coffin if XP 64bit fails as well! easiest would be to just first check the mic issues after the firmware upgrade.

Had massive Audio CutOffs in game when connected to the back of my pc.
Now i tried connecting it on the 2x front USB connections on my pc.

Now it worked! No AudioCutOffs!

May it seems the front usb one deliver more power then back (if this is the thing?)

Also on the back i have 4 usbs and i use currently 3x of 4x usb connections on the back.
with the 4.th megalodon i got the issues.

on the front is just the megalodon connected.

Hey guys. I got this headset for chrismas and I was very excited to try it.

Part one.

So I got home, I pluged in my headset and I tried putting on a song, wow, amazing sound. tried playing WoW and CoD MF and the sound was amazing. But it only lasted for a little while. The sound stoped owrking and I got very confused. I replugged the headset and it worked, but after a while the same problem appears.

So I googled the problem and I noticed that alot of people have the same issue. I had not tried my microphone yet so thats what I did next. I called someone on skype, but got instantly hung up and I got this message “Something is wrong with your microphone, try using a USB microphone for this call”. I was very confused, searched the net but didn’t find anything. Even reinstalled skype. Same problem.

So I tried Ventrilo. I got this error when connecting to my guild’s server “Failed to open input device. Another program might have it open already. rc = -10″. I ignored the error and tried to talk. I didn’t hear the sound you get when you press the Push-to-talk bottn (P TTB), neither did the icon next to my name turn green and no one heared me. I googled this error and I did find some sulutions but they always gaved me new errors and my P TTB still wasn’t working. Reinstalled vent but still the same issue.

Part two.

So today, 8 days after I got the headset, I got a new USB card (PCIe USB 3.0 Card. Works with Windows 7). Since some people got the headset to work with a new usb card.

Excited as I were, I put the card in the computer, plugged my headset in to it.

I tried skype and I did not get the “Something is wrong with your microphone, try using a usb microphone for this call” error. Instead I got “No answer from (namehere)” instantly when calling. I tried calling every person online but I got the same message. Wierd.

So now I went to try out vent, I got another error, different one. I do not remember what it was called but I did search the net and I found a solution, and it worked. No error now. And my PTTB works too! But I get no sound when pressing it, even though the icon next to my name turns green. Wierd..

So now I was going to try the sound. I opened spotify and put on a song. Spotify went crazy, switched songs instantly for a little while then I got the error “There is a problem with your soundcard. Spotify can’t play music”.

I’m very confused and I have no idea what to do now. When I plug my headset through the new USb card, the headset seem to work but the soundcard doesn’t.

I am running Windows 7 x64

Hopefully someone can help me.

I just try the Megalodon on a virtual machine using VirtualBox3 wiht windos XP 32bits installed.And all i have to say is the mic sounds much better not perfect…obviously is not any solotion because when you use the headsed on a virtual machine it exlusive on it diden support XP and 7 at the same time but for teamspeak or skype is a mini solution…

i was looking at buying one of these till i stumbled upon this forum. so i take it i shouldn’t trash my Logitec G35 headset for one of these since I’m running win 7 X64… i do wish you poor fellaz and laydayz get a solution, but from the last Razer product i had a prob with im guessing it will be later rather than sooner… i wish you all luck in the future, and from what ive heard this is an awesome headset so seems like a huge shame.

In case you new posters haven’t caught on from the above posts – the Megalodon along with a number of other heavy weight hardware products using usb channels seem to be really hogging all the powered usb bandwidth and thus break down on what seems to be only 64 bit systems.

If anyone has a XP 64bit system, test the Megalodon on that, and this could further confirm this. The only full solution – DON’T install the firmware upgrade mentioned above on Razer’s site, and install a copy of XP 32bit (which will work). Perhaps someone should try installing 32bit versions of Vista and Windows 7 which I think someone mentioned in earlier posts as also being unnaffected.

If you must have a 64bit version of Windows 7 installed, go and get yourself a powered USB, most of them have been reported to work, I can honestly say that mine does. However, your mic will continue to give static over your voice.

Good luck, and all we can do is hope Razer don’t leave this compatibility issue undealt with forever.

I’d be curious to see if this helped your situation:

If you have an “on-board” sound card, try disabling it in BIOS. While I did not have a Megalodon-related issue with that myself, I *did* have an issue with the Barracuda AC-1 card I was using before, which persisted until I disabled the Sigmatel/AC97 audio on my (previous) motherboard.

No guarantees, just a thought.

Re:USB3 adapter–Make sure you installed the drivers that came with the card, not whatever MS “guesses” is right with the “detect new hardware” option.

Mine is a 2-port SIIG PCI-E USB3 card with an NEC controller. I left CoD:MW2 open and was attached to a TS3 server for the past 48 hours. Just picked it up now and the sound is still working. No Mic issue, either…my friends on TS say it’s crystal clear now (I did apply the 32-bit version of the firmware patch from my laptop about 2 months ago).

The only “odd” thing I notice now is that the USB3 ports power off when I turn off the PC, so the headset is no longer powered when I shut off the computer, unlike when I had the headset plugged in to a USB port on the motherboard.

Ventrillo hates the Megalodon. Not a razer issue, but one with Vent. I don’t know anyone that has Vent liking their Megas. Probably another hint at the f-ed up API MS has for USB audio.

I have done some testing with Vista 32 bit now, and the result: No audio cut offs in games, music or video. I tested several games and played about 5 hours without any sound cut off. Also the mic quality is way better on Vista 32 bit compared to 7 64 bit. It is not crystal clear, but the static is gone.

Anyways, this was just for testing purposes. No way in h.. I’m going back to Vista 32 bit :evilgrin:

Hi to all ,as i said i my only post that i am planing on buying Megalodon.
So i have bought one, i am running Windows 7 32-bit. There are some small issues but nothing like audio cutting and mic. problems. I tried the mic. with Skype and my friend say that they don’t hear any static noise just my voice and that it is clear. I have no problems when listening to music or watching a movie, but when i play games like COD4MW2 i hear some strange snapping sound or crackling high pitched sound(sorry for my English) like every 5-7 minutes. And the other thing i have noticed that the Megalodon some how changes the sound scheme of Windows exactly to be the sound of the Start Navigation it changes to a high pitched sound. I have my Megalodon connected on a PCI-E USB 2.0 card ( http://www.sempre-electronics.com/datapro-controller.asp?proname=138211 ) and on the card i have a USB 2.0 hub( http://www.sharkoon.com/html/produkte/hubs/4-port_usb_spinhub/index_en.html ) connected and on the hub i have connected the Megalodon. I did not try connecting it on a the direct USB on the motherboard because i dont have any free ports.

I am another Megalodon victim. Using Win 7 64, too, and after about 30 mins, sound cuts off. Unfortunately, I upgraded firmware yesterday before reading every posts here.

One thing I noticed. Everytime before the sound cuts off, there is a sound exactly like the one, if you are opening a folder in windows. I hope you understand, what I mean, this little “klick” sound. I don´t know whether this is important, or not, just noticed it. ;)

Unknown of course 2.0 are 2 channels L+R it is logical to hear sounds comming from the different sides.Only in mono 1 channel you ll hear the same sound in the 2 ears.

New update i try the Megalodons on OS X Leopard Virtual machine and the mic works perfect.Microsoft fail and Razer to do not realise stable drivers…

Here’s an updated battery of crap i posted to facebook. :) :

I’ve been running on Vista 64 without issue since doing what I discussed in the post above.

Since installing my SIIG USB3 (yes 3) controller card, using the NEC rivers that came with it, and plugging *only* the megalodon’s into it I’ve been able to run the headset without issues to the Mic, sound cutout, or headset shutting off. I ran CoDMW2, iTunes, and Teamspeak3 together for 4 days straight (including time I was there and time I was idle), without issue.

What it really comes down to here is something is broken with USB traffic management in Windows 64′s USB controller drivers. Whatever happened, it’s certainly something microsoft did when converting the windows driver code for USB from 32 to 64 bit. This isn’t the first time I’ve run into a problem with USB devices and x64.

Keep in mind, Megas use about 70-80% of the bandwidth of a single USB controller (not the port, but the actual controller that handles them all). If you have more than one USB audio device on the bus, and you’re using them both, you’re so far underwater it’s just not even funny.

The ony way to really seperate it is to put it on it’s own line, which was what I did. Now, as i said above, no guarantees, but it worked on my AsusP6T6 mobo.

Prudent steps to get it working seem to be:

1. Install a USB3 card.
2. Use the NEC drivers that come with the card, not the one MS tries to install
3. Plug the megalodon, and only the Megalodon, into a port on the USB3 card
4. In games, for sound output, select 7.1 or 5.1 speakers specifically, DON’T use window default
5. Disable any onboard audio conrollers (sigmatel)
6. Use latest Megalodon Firmware.

Big bandwidth hogs are USB audio, USB Network Cards, USB webcams, and, of course, USB hard drives. Keep them as far away from the Megalodon as possible (read: separate controller).

All that said, there is still no guarantee this fixes everyone’s problems, nor does it excuse Razer from not admitting there is an issue and at least telling people what the official line is on the fix. It’s inexcusable to sell a product as compatible with windows x64 when you know it has issues out of the box on a significant number of machines that most user’s don’t have the know-how to address. Especially for something sold as “worry free plug and play–no driver’s required.”

Don’t get me wrong, I love Razer. I bought the very first Boomslang, and I’m typing this on a Tarantula KB with a Belkin n52 and Mamba on either side. when their product works, it EXCELS.

In the case of the Megalodon’s, it’s just a PITA to get it there, and, as best I can tell, it’s not a consistant fix between systems.

I hope Razer doesn’t let this one die on the vine. Since I was able to get it to work, I can use the mic gain levels wherever I want (with crystal clarity), and the sound is just incredible. That was a hard thing to follow after the Barracuda AC1/HP1 setup (another product that took Herculean efforts to get right, but was great once it worked).

I’d like to see Razer tell owners what the issue is, and what is being done to address it. Even if it means a special PC-only driver is needed, I think allot of people would be ok with this. I mean it wouldn’t be the first time razer had to re-write USB code (remember ultrapolling mice?)

Alternately, they could convert this to a USB3 device. Add the extra lanes in a “Megalodon2.” This would be better all around for allot of reasons, namely (1) a tenfold increase in available USB bandwidth, and (2) bi-directional data flow. Most people do not know this, but USB2 can only send OR recieve data–it can’t do both at the same time. This is one of the reasons why data transfer is so slow on USB2. In addition to higher bandwidth, USB3 allows concurrent send and receive. A big plus for a headset with a mic.

To another guy above talking about forward USBs, this is partially true. When I used this on my laptop it was horrible, I heard background noises, it cut out every 5 min, up to 30 with the Razer fix and etc. When I got home I tried it on my normal PC and it seemed to work much better. First I tried with the USB slot on the back. There was no background noise, but it cut every hour or so. Due to the fact I had to reconnect it so often I thought “why not plug it in the USB on top of the PC so its faster?”. Did that and the cutout time improved vastly. From an hour or 2 tops I’ve sometimes had up to 6 hours or the Megalodon working without even one cutout! Sadly, even with such big intervals, the cutout is still a fact.
Two other things I noticed is that microphone cuts out MUCH more than the sound aka I can hear people when Im on Skype or whatever but they say my microphone just keeps stopping every 30 min or so. And the other thing is, it seems Megalodon is very Vent friendly, I have had only 1 cutout in about a month of talking atleast 5 hours a day (this is with Push to Talk btw) while talking on Skype I get a cutout atleast once EVERY call!
Anyway, I’ll try out Noctro’s fixes and see how that goes ;)

Misery loves company. Found this site via Google. Wish I found it before I forked out $150 bones. I too have had all the similar problems with the headset and Win 7 64-bit. When I first started looking at the FAQ on Razer’s site I noticed they still referred to Windows 7 as Beta. Come on Razer…time to update. I just wish they were a little more forthcoming regarding this issue than simple stating that “a few Windows 7 users are having problems with the device..” a few….hundred maybe.

I called Razer to get a refund…still waiting to find out where to send this paperweight. Good luck to you brave souls who have the resources to cough up more money for USB 3.0 cards and the time to spend troubleshooting problems for something that was built “For Gamers. By Gamers”. Funny, but the pretty box this comes in has ‘Put Sound In It’s Place’ imprinted on the front. In the case of the Megalodon, it’s place is back in the R&D lab.

This is only a problem with the compatibility with Microsoft. I mean, it’s not the fault of the Hardware, it’s Microsoft and Razer do it’s job to solve this problem and all folks here had big hope that this problem will be solved. I’m I right guys ?

But the new FW is listed to support Win7 and must support it logicaly…

I’ve been following this thread for a few days. Just bought my headset a few weeks ago. Noticed the sound cutting out in vent and then noticed while I was watching movies in VLC the sound would cut off at the same time as vent. This let me know it wasn’t a vent problem.

First – Looked around and found many people having the same problem, went to razer and found the FW update. Installed it, and found that it didn’t do anything but mess up my mic.

Second – I found this page, took the advice of the first poster and disabled the “USB selective suspend setting”. This worked wonderfully and I have not had audio problems yet, and have been watching for days.

*Question* By turning this off could I harm my system? I assume there is a reason for the power suspend setting, so I just want to make sure this doesn’t burn out my motherboard or anything.

Third – The mic issue was next. People in vent said they heard a sound like someone was screaming behind me. I switched on the listen option and it was pretty bad. Poked around for a while and found out it was high pitched reverb, and started messing with mic sensitivity and volume. My settings right now are as follows
- in my windows recording device setting under levels I have my Mega turned down to 4, could probably go lower.
- On the Mega remote thing, I have my mic sensitivity setting at half way into the blue, on my Mic level I have it turned up right below blue.
While I still hear the static it’s significantly reduced.

While I like this headset, it doesn’t seem like Razer is doing anything about the problems. I seriously considering sending these back. My brother bought the Carachias or whatever and has fewer problems

I tried plugging in the Megalodon to the USB3 port but i get no sound at all now. De system detects the headphones but I get no sound from them or the mic. Cant even play the test sounds. Any thoughts?

Just give then a little more time. Since on XP or MacOS X Leopard this headset works flawless. Perfect sound, perfect mic, all is beyond all that I would expect… Unless You have Windows Vista or Seven. Sad. But they may fix it, eventually… :P

I noticed something, When I’m playing , my sound always cut off, when I’m not playing, no cuts. Any idea ?

In game the the headset is under more charge to calculate the multi channel sound bla bla bla and probably needs more power.This is my point of view.

All my port were 5v . So what ?

Sorted it out on my rig. I have new displays which I’m guessing must power their USB hub as simply moving the Megalodon to the USB port on the display has kept it stable all week. Not a single crash and I’ve used them every night. My old display definitely didn’t work as I tried it. I think some displays do and some don’t provide power to the USB ports in them.

Try it, it may work for you and save you from buying a separate powered USB hub. Hope this works for a few people.

Should point out that the Mic issue is still not sorted, even in a powered hub. I just listening to my own mic and it’s really crazy. Even with the recording lvl at 20 and the sensitivity down to 1 it’s like a robot in a hurricane.

What do you mean by your DISPLAY ?

He means his display has powered USB ports on it (Dell, sMsund, ASIs, ans apple all do this on some models).

Another thought came to me on this issue…the voltage on all USB ports is 5v, but the current load capability is not.

I’m starting to wonder if some mobos don’t provide enough current to their USB ports as well. This may be why one person mAy have no issue, whereas another does.

The bottom line is…

If you have a powered usb hub or some other peripheral that has an extra powered usb attached to it – you can plug your Megalodon into it without cut outs.

The only issue with this is that the mic static that began occuring after the firmware update will continue.

So a powered usb partially solves the issues; all of them except the mic static.

Until then, Razer are going to act like they are getting a fix for an issue that is clearly software related, and caused by the new handling of usb channels on 64 bit technologies.

Well I don’t know if it’s just the hubs I’ve tried (my first didn’t work, lots of popping and hissing and headset still cutout, returned it for a Belkin….same thing) but I’m not even having any luck with a powered USB hub. I don’t know if the hub can’t keep up with the transfer rates or what but there’s just a lot of noise and when the sound is stuttering the screen will even sometimes momentarily freeze. Now I’m back to the Megalodon in the front port by itself and running minor peripherals off the hub. I have quite a few peripherals plugged in and could try unplugging a lot of them but really why should I have to? I will continue to read up here as it’s the most informative forum I’ve found on this so far. Any comments on the hub would be appreciated. Are you guys dedicating the hub to the Megalodon alone? As well as the bus the hub is plugged into?

Yes, it is true that not all powered usb hubs support the Megalodon.

We could compile a listing of hubs that do work… I can definitely say that the G19 keyboard will support the Megalodon.

That keyboard plugs into the wall? I have a Saitek Cyborg but it just has a USB passthrough coming off the mobo.

My friend game my headset a spot on name… he called it the Megaloturd, which pretty much describes it. Razer didn’t want to refund me cash and i didn’t want a voucher for their store so I still have the unit. Razer asked for sound samples of the mic almost 2 months ago after I argued with them for a month. I never heard anything back from them on the subject, but I’m assuming they are still working on the issue hopefully.

Nope, nothing new to report. Sent my last mail to Razer support on January 7th, and have yet to reiceive a response. Let’s hope they are so busy working on the Megalodon issue that they don’t have time to answer my mails :evilgrin:

I just gave up. Sent it back to them for a refund. I’m not anti-Razer as I picked up the Carcharias as the replacement. Gonna wait it out and revisit USB headphones again this summer. Hopefully they will have sorted out this mess by then.

BTW this week or may be comes me a new nettop and ill try the megalodons on different OS.Today i try the Mega.. on Win 7 32 and the mic suck.And other strange thing the integrated mic in my Laptop works much better with the 32 bit drivers of windows than the original ones i am getting confused may the enginers totaly suck on doing x64 drivers may¿?

I tried a USB3 card on my Vista x64 machine. The card is the Sunsway/ST Lab PCI-E USB 3.0 CARD 2P with a NEC chip. I used the NEC drivers that came with the expansion card, and my Megalodon is flashed up to the latest firmware.

A memory stick works fine on the new USB3 ports, but no go with the Megalodon. It appears in control panel/sound, but if I click properties and try the “test” button under the advanced tab, I get a window saying “failed to play test tone.”

VLC pretends to play mp3s, but there is no sound. Windows Media Player says it encountered a problem and sends me to this URL: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/webhelp/default.aspx?&mpver=11.0.6002.18111&id=C00D11B1&contextid=216&originalid=80070001

On the motherboard USB2 ports the Megalodon works fine (mp3s etc) until I play a game, then I get the cut offs like everyone else.

Haven’t posted yet, but have been following the thread. I’ve been suffering from the same Megalodon issues posted here; Vista 64 bit OS.

The matter of the Megalodon simply overloading the USB controller that a previous poster suggested, made some sense, so I purchased one of these…

It is the same USB controller the previous poster also purchased. It’s completely fixed all my problems. Since then, I have gamed for 10+ hours on the Megalodon without any issues, when usually I’d have an issue every hour or so.

Also, a buddy of mine has the Megalodon on a Win7 64 bit, and he has had no issues pre-firmware update… And he has a super beefy motherboard with 3 USB controllers… So it definitely seems like an issue with the amount of traffic some folks may be trying to shove through 1 USB controller… Just wanted to throw this up here for further though :)

Wow, thanks Eschin, you gave me an idea. We have the same chip but for me the Megalodon wasn’t working on the NEC USB3.0 ports.

It’s because SIIG ships their product with a newer driver than what Sunsway includes with their product (1.0.14.0).

I downloaded the NEC drivers from the SIIG website, http://www.siig.com/Drivers.aspx?pn=JU-P20412-S2 – and they were version 1.0.17.0. After installing this my Megalodon runs just fine on the USB3.0 ports.

So, for Simon who posted here earlier, and anyone else having trouble running the Megalodon on the NEC USB 3.0 chip: it works with driver version 1.0.17.0 but fails with 1.0.14.0.

Now I have to try this setup for a few days and see if the sound cut offs go away. It sometimes took several hours of gaming with intensive 3D sound before it would occur.

Nice to hear that it works with the USB 3.0 controller. One question though.. What about the microphone quality after using the usb 3.0 controller? Is it still static sound?

The microphone has a little background static. From what I hear though, this is much worse if you use Win7? I’m still on Vista.

yeah, I’m using Windows 7 64 bit, and the mic quality is just horrible(after the firmware update. Before the update the mic just worked fine). Maybe I’ll buy myself a USB controller too, though I am now using a powered USB hub, and it does prevent the audio cut offs.

Also, I did have some very bad mic static before the USB 3.0 upgrade.

I just turned the Windows microphone sensitivity down to around 25, and now it’s crystal clear.

I have nothing to complain about anymore :)… Good luck to all you folks still suffering from this headache :(

Glad to hear the SIIG USB3 fix worked for you. I used the exact same SIIG card you did leading to my solution posted earlier.

Upon further digging into this, my hypothesis remains that the issue is either one of poor traffic management (as I posted previously), or one of the USB ports on the MB being underpowered, or both. I know that laptop USB ports put out higher power (on average) than desktop boards, as most laptops don’t need a “Y-cable” to drive external 2.5″ USB drives, whereas it was 6-kinds of hell to find two ports on my Asus motherboard that spun the drive up rather than making it go “click-click-click…” And I never had issue with my Megs on my XPS Laptop. As my mouse was bluetooth, the megs were the only USB device as well, to traffic wasn’t really a concern there.

As we all know, the desktop was a whole different story.

I’m leaning to believe that the issue is a combination of the two, which the USB3.0 card fixed. Independent power + independent traffic management (when using the NEC driver SIIG provided).

unfortunately, in order to do that you’d have to strip the wires to get a current probe around *one* of the USB power leads.

Kind of a risky (and expensive) thing to test.

as i posted already before the megalodon got audio cut offs when connecting it behind the pc on the usb.
now on the front side in usb plugged in it works perfekt.
(front side: 2x usbs: 1x megalodon and 1x empty)

now the NEW thing_
when connecting my external hard drive on the front windows 7 x64 cannot really find it.
it always comes the plugin sound and plug out sand very fast….and he cannot recognize it.

now i plugged out the megalodon and then plugged in the external hard drive…

I don’t seem to have the headset cutting out problem as bad as others…perhaps only every few days it happens. I do have the terrible mic quality problem though and I use Windows 7 64 bit.

I know noone knows for sure, but is it likely they’ll fix this? I only recieved mine a few days ago and need to decide whether to return it or not. People actually tell me not to talk because the quality is so bad. It seems strange that it’s been out half a year and not fixed.

Also, 2.7 is the latest, right?

i bought a Lexma 7 port powered usb 2.0 hub and it still happens often to me if anyone has any ideas of things to help please let me know.

After many hours of playing the sound never cut off on me, so I think this is working, running the Megalodon on a USB 3.0 expansion card.

I contacted ST-Labs and they made the latest NEC drivers 1.0.18.0 available on their website at http://www.st-lab.com/admin/upfile/UploadFile/driver/nec720200.exe

SemiBruceLee: I don’t think anyone can say with 100% certainty it will fix your problem. But it seems likely, as it solved it for several of us already. The card you are looking at there has the same NEC UPD720200 chipset that is in the SIIG and Sunsway/ST-Labs cards mentioned here before.

Viryn: That’s exactly the same problem I had when I was using old NEC drivers. Try new drivers :)

No worries, mate. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that this continues to work for people. It sucks that it requires you to buy a $40 card, but, in my opinion, this headset is totally worth it. I have a set of Logitech G35s as well, which, while nice, are not nearly as comfortable for long gaming sessions. The G35s are closed cans, so your ears get hot, and add to that my having a large noggin, they tend to squeeze my skull to the point of near headache after an hour. The Megs are just light, have more controls on their puck over the audio and capture, and the semi-open nature of them keeps my ears cool and able to hear “non-gaming emergencies” that occasionally need to be dealt with ;)

@Noctro – damn straight, this headset is amazingly comfortable, and if its screw up on 64bit systems wasnt so incredibly sketchy, I would love the Megalodon.

@Andrew – nope, the mic issues were still evident for me after I bought a usb hub.

It’s good that there’s some kind of fix for this headset. But, still, for me it’s not normal to buy something for 150€, then to buy more hardware, etc.

I will sell my Megalodon with almost no loses, then I am heading for Sennheiser PC350. No surround, but with nice source and good 2.1 output device, you can still a very nice surround.

Of course, I am still looking for “cheaper” and official fix and if I found something, I’ll post it here if not posted already.

If you like the megs, but don’t like the grief with the underpowered USB, get a Creative X-Fi USB card and the Razer CarCharias Headset. That will give you virtualized 5.1, with the same cans as the Megalodon. The main diff is the mixer is a systray device, not on the USB puck. Senns are nice, but 2.1 audio will suck for gaming. Been there, done that.

After all of this I’m feeling pretty confident that teh issue is due to some motherbards having underpowered USB ports. The other thing I learned over the last few days is not all external hubs are equal…it’s not the volts, it’s the AMPS that matter, and most hubs are well below 500mA.

I’m guessing that Razer is trying t figure out how to adjust the firmware to handle undercurrent recovery. That is, most likely, the cause of the Megalodon crashing.

Those of you that have megalodons that don’t work on your PC without crashing, do me a favor, if you have an external 2.5″ “laptop type” drive, try plugging it into one usb port and see if your machine recognizes it. Post your results here to let us know.

I buy a nettop for my mom the las week the Zotac MAG i the resoults of my tests are.The headset works better on the build in motherboard USB s than the front nad the top USB…the sound of the mic is a little bit clear.I test them to a win 7 OS becaouse the PC doesn t have a optical drive and it is easyer to make a botable USB flash drive for 7 and vista than for XP is a bit more difficult but i ll make it in few days.Anyway i am gonna buy a Express Card with 2 USB 3 with a power input via adapter like the Old Nintendo xDD for my laptop and i ll fuckn PRAY to make it work propertly.

I’m on Windows 7 32bit, I’ve had these headphones for a month and I can also confirm the mic quality is horrible. There is so much white noise it’s almost unusable. Luckily, I have not had the crashing problem people complain of. I really don’t need a USB3 controller, but if it will make my 200$ headset usable for cooperative gaming, I guess it’s worth it. Razer really dropped the ball on this one.

Im assuming that you have installed the firmware release… and that will most likely be the cause of your mic quality issue.

And you shouldn’t experience any failures, as you arent running 64bit.

It’s nice to see that im not the only one who is having problems with this headset.
My headset doesn’t have problems with the mic or soundcut issues, and i have 64-bit win 7.
But i have a problem, in 7.1 mode, in games like counter-strike source, left 4 dead etc. (source-based games), the 7.1 audio just sounds like a bunch of mashed up sounds but all together. I can’t hear where the enemies come from, gunshots etc. Please help me guys.. and yes i did insure that my current audio device was set to the megalodon (7.1 audio), and altså 7.1 audio in-game.

Yes, I am running the latest firmware. I usually upgrade firmware when I buy new devices since they usually improve the device, and rarely have such degredations. This time I lost. :(

Hi Thomas try configure the channels directly from the Razer physical panel,just push the triple head snake button,and my suggestions are max bars for the center,2 red bars for the front speakers,4 red bars for the side speakers,2 red bars for the back speakers,and the bass at max.BTW make sure to set in game config to 7.1 5.1… and in CSS the multichannel sound suck a bit is better to use headphones profile,in l4d1/2 the seound is nice and in HL2/Ep1 not in 2 when i put the config to 7.1 and press ok the game automaticly turns it to 2 channels even in fresh windows install….Good luck and in my opinion the CSS sound is realy loudgh.

And finally in some cases for me the Megalodons sounds strange i heare noises distorrsions at high level sound explosions and the problem fix is to replug in the headset.

Yeah… Surround “thing” in CSS (and any source based game i presume) is total suckage. I played UnrealTournament3 – surround works way beyond I wanted to hear, nearly perfect for my experience and full pleasure of gaming experience.
In CounterStrikeSource… Heh total garbage. Set audio options into 2speakers/headphones or try “snd_digital_surround 1″ in console (and to reset sound “snd_restart” <- very handy command when Your sound is little "messed up" after alt+tab also help with restarting sound without exiting game after cutoff).
This is only thing I could find to improve surround sound within game… Still it sucks compared to other well engineered and polished games.

To real pain in the ass: cutoff problem… Guys have You tried new fix from Microsoft? After that fix cutoffs still occur but for me its one for a few days. At the moment I can listen music and play my beloved warsow.net game for whole day without cuttoff (still only few cutoff were in CounterStrikeSource :P).

Silly me, I forgot to write: When setting 2speakers/headphones in CSS leave 7.1 on. It make surround sound better. Atleast this works for me. :P

I installed it on 27 and today is 29. I left PC on for whole day today – no random cutoff yet. Mic sens dosen’t work at all and still got funky static noise… Mic sucks but it works atleast now for me without random cutoffs every 1-3hours or leaving PC on. If cutoff occur I’ll write here when, where and at what mode it happend.

Few Cutoffs while playing CSS in 7.1 mode… Still no problems with Warsow+iTunes on 2.1. Strange.

I’m a bit sad, because I can’t return the Megalodon because I got it as a gift for Christmas, bought from the US and i live in Denmark, so it would be waste of time and money to return it.
Right now i still use my Razer Barracuda HP-1 (5.1 sound), and it works perfect in Counter-Strike:Source, but the ‘head-band’ is broking, so its pretty irritating to wear. Thats why the Megalodon was on my ‘wish-list’ at christmas.

I feel stupid if I begin to use the 2.0/headphones sound in CSS, because im used to 5.1 :(
I really don’t understand why the Megalodon sucks that much in source-based games, it pisses me off, because the headset is so expensive.

But I will try some of youre adviceses guys. Thanks again, write more on this lovely website (Thanks Dax Frost) if you got more anwsers to my problem.

did you try setting the game to 5.1 in audio prefs? Don’t use “use windows default,” as it tend to suck royally. My experience has been pretty good since doing that.

Granted, this is on L4D2, but it should apply to css as well as both are source games.

I still miss my barracuda system :/ I loved how you could set up how sensitive your hearing was on the AC-1…my only real complaint was that the HP-1s were a little cheap in the electronics and control puck area…the volume knob tended to make a lot of white noise when adjusting sound levels. I’ve heard that the Xonar is the pci-e equivalent of the AC-1, but I kinda drew the line at $230 for a sound card…LOL ;)

Thomas: Its matter of surround implementation in each single game… I bet they never wanted to do such things like surround in source or it was just implemented on late versions of source engine, so whole environment is not prepared for surround experience… :s

I used 7.1 speakers set from Creative long time ago… Surround experience in CSS was same like on Megalodons now… You just listen from where sound comes, nothing more.

By 7.1 Surround Sound I would love to get gaming experience deeper but since developers dosen’t want to spend time to polish it… It will be better to stick to 2.1 sound. :P
I don’t play many games, but UnrealTournament3 was very good game with surround I played lately. Give it a try.

Back to wrath of cutoff punishment… In Warsow, no cutoffs. In CSS still got some… Maybe it is related to sound implementation so wrong implemented sound boosts crashing of this headset?

Problems now:
- Mic problems when I talk over Ventrilo, my mates hear they own voices, gunshots etc. ingame when I talk over Ventrilo. It is like an ECO, or something when i talk, please help.

- When i play Counter-Strike:Source i can use Headphones/2.0 sound and 2.0 sound on the Megalodon controle pad, then the sound doesn’t “mess up”.

- I have never experienced any audio cut-offs, but when I play CSS i got at least 2 audio cut-off where I have to unplug the Megalodon and plug it in again in like one hour. :/

i think most motherboards have bad usb connectors. i use my mamba and the megalodon now on the powered usb hub and had no cut off since hours. quake live, skype, youtube… no problems

Why am I not suprised…

Yesterday I sent another mail to Glen Frick at Razer asking for the original FW. My advice is that everybody will ask the original FW, because at that stage the mic was still good.

Sound was (and is) cutting of after FW update, so no gain there. But at least the mic will work.

Hope that they respond and send met the original FW. I got an powered usb-hub which solved the problem.

So everybody mail Razer and ask for the original FW. If we do it together they might listen to us (for once…).

I did FW update my Megalodon yesterday, and yes the mic sucks hard time, but I’m not getting any audio cut-off’s. I tested it by playing Counter-Strike: Source almost the whole day, and listening to iTunes, youtube etc. It didn’t cut off.
Therefore i use the old my from the old headset, and the megalodon audio as my speakers. So far so good.

Heh, about update don’t bother about it… It’s crap anyway, it still cutoffs. Dunno why it is now better, maybe it is that I switched USB plugs order because I had maintenance cleanig inside PC (usually I plug them at random order :P).

Yeah, I would love to go back to first firmware I had on Megalodon. Mic sens worked and mic was better quality, now it is almost worthless.

Alright I was really fed up with my mic. I have had it for about 7 months now. On my vista 64 the static had eventually gone away but I recently Switched to 7. After I was looking around today, Someone on Newegg suggested taking the MICROSOFT mic level down to 5(razer said 30). After doing this kick mic lvl and sens up to max on the headset. Do a voice record. THERE IS NO STATIC!!. I had usually kept it down to about a 30 on the microsoft levels (like razer had said) and it never worked. I had not attempted to go lower. It works though. Try it youll be happy

I am not sure what is wrong with your guys CSS mine seems to be fine on 7.1. I hear everything very well and is beyound the “headphone” option i was using before.

The problem i have is that CSS (steam does though) does not pick up the microphone and I can not talk in game with it not even test it. Any help or fixs?

Got a mail back today from Razer. They tried to send me FW 2.1.1, but they got the mail back. They will try to send it again or post it somewhere on the internet, so I can grab it from there.

The mic has been crystal clear ever since.

Also, still running fantastic on the 3.0 USB controller. No cutoffs, mic is great, sound is great. I have easily gamed for 50+ hours without a single issue now. Good luck to everyone still suffering through this headache :(

Btw i reflash my headset again to the last FW with any USB device unpluget exept the Megalodons(I sue laptop if you use a tower PC just get ps2 Keyboard and Mouse) so the static noise at 50 in windows now is much better thant the old 50 no i hear my own voice but without much noise and when i set it 5 the mic sound is near to the perfectnes.Of course this is a provisional fix the mute button doesnt work propertly … ah and for now i have no cutting on CSS for now.

I will have to apoligise. Your suggestion did do the trick! I do have to say that I decreased it to 5!!! in windows instead of 20. But it was crystal clear after tweaking.

Hi, so I just had a few questions about setting levels to Mystikal and Eschin.

Do you have the megalodon sensitivty (set by the external box) low or high? In windows, is the mic sensitivity set by the level in Manage Audio Devices > Recording > Microphone > Levels? I seem to have only one slider there just labelled ‘Microphone’

Megalodon sensitivity is low (5 bars aprox). I use Windows 7 and I do the following. Within the megalodon sound device you can state record level (third tab I think). This I put on 5.

I got the latest BETA firmware update from razer and IT WORKS!!!! The mic sounds amazing now… Just wait a little longer and they should release it on their site. the firmware I got was 2.12-1 so they must have been working on it. This problem sucked so hard for the longest time.

I got the same firmware update in my mailbox… Have not updated it anymore due to the fact that I have clear sound now also, by reducing in windows the mic level to 5.

Same with me, mic lvl 5 works fine. I am using a powered usb hub, too and since then, no more audio cut offs.

I also have the firmware beta and it fixes the cutoff sound for me and the mic. world of warcraft gives me a crackling sound if on 7.1 mode but if i change it to 2.0 its fine mass effect 2 and other games sound great on 7.1 so im wondering if wow just doesn’t support it fully or something and since the changes they made the 7.1 work more properly maybe? dunno. but the new beta driver is amazing. i emailed them and asked if they had a new one and they gave me it so i suggest trying the same.

I now noticed a real loud klick occuring constanly, if I am watching video clips and movies, but not in games. Is there anything known about this issue?

I’ll post my mic settings when I get home tomorrow. I know I have the gain on the puck set @~75%, but I don’t recall what the windows settings are. I can say that the mic is quite clear.

@blubber: Haven’t had that problem. I recently watched RE3:Extinction, and had no issue…in fact I was kind of impressed with the surround sound.

Finally! Had to do the installation through device manager though, windows wouldn’t detect it in any other way. So far so good. The mic quality is back to good and clear sound, no more static fuzz. It seems that the sound cut offs are gone too, though I haven’t tested it out more than 1 hour. But no cut offs then.

Well it didnt do it for me. I cant install the drivers. Did try your way to do it, but I onlye get that this driver is not inteded for this platform. Im on win 7 x64 bit ultimate.

Well Im technicall adept, but windows wont let me install the beta drivers. Just tells me that they are not intended for this platform. Weird that Im the only one who get`s this error.

Be sure you are using this on Windows 7 64 bit – I haven’t tested on Vista 64 bit – although it should work too.

I could not get it to install the drivers from your package when plugging it in, but I installed those drivers from the 2.7 package. Then I used your beta firmware update and it appears to work. The mic is much better, im not sure if there are any differences in the driver package but it’s a significant difference making the mic functional once again. Thank you :D (difference is the tornado is gone from my mic!)

I got the same problem like AuraofVengeance, no way to install the driver under Win 7 64 bit. Gotta wait ´till the whql driver will be released. So I am going to use my powered usb hub further on.

And to fix them, I had to completely remove the old drivers as in the link i posted.

I hear ya,
I did everything possible to get the drivers in the beta download to install. For some reason after removing anything and everything trying to install the beta drivers it told me they weren’t compatible with the system. Not exactly sure why but everything is working fine now with the 2.7 drivers + beta firmware exe. I would have liked to install the drivers and the beta firmware to see if there is any difference between the two drivers but I’m happy that the mic works even with the 2.7 drivers. I guess we’ll just have to wait for an official update from Razer and hope to god that whatever they release works as well as the leak and hopefully even better.

The problem is, Win 7 64 wont let you install any non digital signatured drivers at all. Only possibility is to press F8 during booting windows and select to turn off the digital signature test. But you´d have to do this every time you´ll start win again, so I´ll be waiting. ;)

I browsed around Razerzone.com today to see if this was available to someone who didn’t get it via email and no luck. Just the 2.7 FW installer. Any ideas when this might be going live? I haven’t even been using my Mega’s for months because they’re so bad on my pc but would love to get them going. Can someone pls comment on the specifics of what this is called so we can start searching it? Is it the 2.7 FW with a ‘driver’ or is it a patch to the FW? I thought Razer’s thing with this headset was that it was driverless but I’m definitely not going to complain if it works.

Blubber: That’s only if a driver is a resident program require to run a device. The “driver’ in this case is only used when you flash the headset (i.e. plug it in while depressing the 3-snake logo button). Once the flash update is done, the need for the driver is gone.

Oh, for those that asked: under the 2.7 drivers I had +20dB gain ON @ 20% mic volume. Puck mic is set at ~60-70% (i.e. it’s in the red). No acoustic weirdness with the mic.

I haven’t updated th firmware yet, as everyting seems to be working fine at this point. Still using the USB3 PCI-E card.

I can’t update my FW….It keeps installing the old driver. I tried to follow “http://www.daxfrost.com/?p=293″ and even with uninstalling the drivers disconnecting my internet .. i plug it in and windows says my device is ready for use…HELP?

I disabled my sound card, no cutoff so far. I still have tornado mic, so that leaves me to believe my problem is still not fixed.

I think i got it to work..I tried a different USB port ( in the back) and i was able to update the firmware..however it did not ask me where the drivers were located..it automatically installed them. Is there a way to make sure i have the latest drivers/firmware version? How do i know ? When i go to drivers it says it was updated on 7/13/2009 and driver version 6.1.7600.16385. However i know that i ran the .exe and the firmware updated.

This is exactly what you need to do, I also found Windows was remembering the usb port I plugged into and had to keep using a new one… so it seems you need to use the ports wisely ;)

After installing latest firmware from razer cutoffs are not occuring… Still got this funny static noise (but “overall” quality of mic is far better than before).

Half of bad is fixed at the moment. Still mic is messed up.

Hey, I just wanna remind you guys who’re having problems… not to forget that you have to hold on to the triple-headed-snake-logo button while plugging in the device.

I’m using the one released on the website. I still have a tornado mic, but no sound cut off after a 5 hour session of Heroes of Newerth with my friends.

Going to do some further testing and see if it is computer related.

To fix mic feed back noise go to windows control panel > sound > recording > set the level all the way down to 2, 3, maybe 4. Many Valve games require that you also turn down the recording volume either through steam or through the game’s options.

I’ve installed the beta firmware same results. I’m going to try to uninstall the drivers and reinstall the beta ones. Headset has NOT cut off in any of my games (Mass Effect 2)

Ok from my experience is highly recomendet to uninstall the previous flashing drivers and install the new ones.Everyone must do this or the mic can suck a little bit with the last firmware,believe me there is a bit of difference with the mic quality if you flash directly with the old flash drivers than using the new ones.

i had the mic problem but manged to find a work around in win 7 64 bit as for the sound cut out still a pain in the ass.

how i “fixed” the mic well may sound stupid but i lowered the windows mic level to 20 and turn the control box level up and put the mic sens on 1 bar this has stopped the mic issues in the most part but my sound still cuts out causing problems when i am on a role in mw2 lol

Does a simple device manager uninstall remove the drivers, since they’re technically firmware placed into the control block’s memory? I assumed the new firmware/drivers simply overwrote the old one completely.

After latest firmware update no cutoffs yet… It is 4 days since update. Cutoff problem seems 100% fixed for me.

Mic is still messed up. Work-a-round is to set it at low level in windows to something like 15-20 and then mess with mic level on megalodon control box to find best quality (still far worse than on first firmware).

(this is without USB3 extension card, im going to buy one soon so if it will change anyting i’ll write here)

Hi there 1 sound cut anfter 2 days using the official FW with the beta i stay around 10 days without sound cuts…

DaxFrost do you thing is a good idea to tray reflashing to the beta FW having newer version installed in the headset.

BTW i am not using a powered HUB or any hub just have them pluget in the B USB of my laptop.And the sound cut was in CSS.Do you thing it is a Source engine problem?May i have to try playing some other game for 3 or 4h anyway the sound cut ocured just in 30 minutes of playing CSS…

Hi all i have to say it is possible back to the 212b2 beta Firmware but only using the driver from the official 2.12 Firmware.And now is time for testing if any sound cut will happen i thing to stay with the BETA FW for around 1 month and try again the new one for the same time to give some conclusions…

People don t do it for now it is dangerous,and most important until I or anyone else confirm the BETA FW works better than the official.And the most important no one knows what can happen using the 2.12 flash drivers to put the 212b2 FW.

After firmware update to 2.12 (February 16) to present day i have only one cutoff, in Counterstrike Source 7.1. Sound stopped and restarting megalodon caused crash of windows7. And it is only one accident so it is nice.

After updating the firmware to version 2.12, the audio cutoff and mic static seem to be a thing of the past : ) But now a new problem surfaced. Not entirely sure whether anybody else experienced the same issue but think that i will just share.

After numerous occasions in flashing the firmware, a couple of different USB ports have been used. I believed that this has been highlighted by DAxfrost earlier due to the fact that Windows actually remembers the USB port that were used previously by the Megalodon.

One of the ports that i used to update the firmware happens to be the regular USB port for my mouse (back of CPU tower). After successfully updating the firmware, i plugged back the megalodon into 1 of the 2 front USB ports and replugged my mouse to the SAME USB port (back of CPU tower) used to flash the megalodon earlier on. I noticed that i’m experiencing frequent power cutoffs to my mouse (razer copperhead) ever since with intervals being as short as 3~5 mins!

After plugging my mouse to another USB port, the power cutoffs ceased to exist. The question here is whether the flashing of the firmware has affected the capability of the said USB port such that it is experiencing frquent power cutoffs now???

Anybody else experiencing the same issue? If yes, is there any fixes for this as i do not wish to have 1 USB port gone forever after fixing the megalodon issue. My OS is windows vista 64bit btw. Please advise.

I’ve been following this thread for a few weeks, having bought a headset along with a new machine.

The headset worked flawlessly for just over a week, when today I started to experience cut-outs. No problem I thought, I know there’s a solution (of sorts) in the f/w update.

Only thing is I can’t get it to install. I tried the instructions on the Razer site. No joy. Remove Megolodon and re-attach while pressing the middle button and nothing happens – I’m never asked for the new ‘drivers’ – it simply sits there with the 7.1 led being the only one active. Win 7 64-bit Home Premium simply sits there doing nothing at all. I’ve also run out of USB 3.0 ports to try it on. (Anyone know how to make Win 7 ‘forget’ stuff?)

So I’ve followed Dax’s uninstall instructions and still no joy. It simply said ‘Windows has installed the most appropriate driver for this device’.

Finally found out that I had to disable automatic device updating, however when I browse to the directory that has the .inf file in it, Win 7 tells me there’s no compatible drivers to be found. I only managed to get this far after renaming the directory a few times too.

What am I doing wrong here? Like na7ual above I simply have the default MS drivers from 2009.

I did, once, try to run the f/w updater as Admin, but I closed the window when it failed to render correctly and the progress bar covered the OK/Cancel button.

You know, for a ‘Driverless’ device, trying to install these damned drivers is doing my head in.

I know what you meant, and I found that removing my internet connection solved this, as I mentioned in:

does anyone got the game alien vs predator? it isn´t playable with the megalodon, crackings all the way. the crackings within watching movies, i´ve been able to solve with audio codecs, but those in game crackings, i got no solution.

update:

very strange, within the non directx 11 mode, no crackings. but if i try to start it with directx 11 support, there are those crackings

I have the game. No problem with sound here in dx11 mode. I’m using the 2.12 beta. No point in upgrading to the final 2.12, as the beta works perfect(sound and mic).

well, i´ll send it back. the problem occurred in other games, too, so i think it´s a hardware problem with the headset. hope it wont last too long until i´ll get it back.

update:

it is no megalodon related problem. i tried a medusa 5.1 usb headset, same problems. so, it has to be the usb controller, i think.

I really appreciate what your doing and it’s been really helpful for me since I’m going to get a Megalodon myself in a few days. I’m just wondering, did the 32-bit have this problem? And I’m guessing as of now, the beta firmware is the best way to go to solve this?

If you’re running 32 bit you should be 100% fine.
No one has had any issues with 32 bit.

Additionally, if you do upgrade to 64 bit, there is already a solution here.

I contact Razor support, because I had the same problem. Here is the answer :

“1. Try plugging the device into a different USB port on the system. If the device is plugged into a USB port on the front of the system, try a USB port in the back.
2. Disconnect all other USB devices.
3. Remove any USB Hubs. Plug the device directly into a USB on the system.
4. Try the product on another system, without using any drivers. Does the problem still occur?
5. If the problem is occurring in an application, does the problem occur outside the application directly in the operating system?”

I tried what they said. My computer is a laptop, so it doesn’t have a front USB port. But I tried to connect the device without any other device connected trough USB. And it works! I saw that I have to connect the Megalodon before connecting my keyboard to have a sound…
I can’t understand…It’s too weird, but it…is…

i did a rma for my megalodon, and i received a brand new one. got still that “cracking” problem, but only with older games. the new ones are working fine, but older games, like stronghold, are not playable at all.

To solve all your problem, if your USB port is not 3.0 or over 900mA , your megalodon will crash. It’s a power issue. I know it cause I got the same problem as all of you. then I bought a usb 3.0 card and I got no more problem. Hope this help

Apparently neither of possible solutions worked for me. Will try USB 3.0 card next week, if that won’t work, the Megaladon will go back to Amazon. Pity, very comfortable headset.

I’ve had this sat in a drawer for a while now (was upset with echoeyness ingame caused by me trying to use 7.1 in stereo games) got it out again and think the sound is awesome, only problem is seeing as I’m now windows 7 64bit i’m having loads of trouble with the microphone being staticky. I did the firmware fix with still no luck. Is the usb hub trick just for the other issue it had with cutouts, or can it fix the microphone fault aswell?

I have never really been able to fix the static fully. After the firmware I still have to keep my mic volume/sensitivity down to 1% to 5% depending on the game.

Thats really a shame seeing as it’s quite a good headset otherwise. even when i adjust windows/headset settings, my ventrilo friends find it unbearable, has razer recognised this fault yet, after the firmware adjustement I mean? Not sure whether to sell on ebay and maybe find another alternative.

Devolve, I too have the same problem. I just got my headset today. The sound is awesome, music and movies are amazing. But i logged on vent and heard, “your mic is messed up” I thought they were crazy. I thought they would be saying how awesome it is, and then I checked it myself on a vent test, then a windows recorder test. I get static, BAD. I tried the new firmware which claims to fix this problem, but it doesn’t. So sad, I really don’t want to have to send this back. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i cant talk in any program because when i plug in megaladon computer say that the USB controller bandwidth is exceeded and megaladon use 62% i can just listen music or watch movies. I wonder if this problem is solved if i bought the USB 3.0 card. I tried the Megalodon 2.12 updater 64bit (i use windows 7 ultimate 64bit) and still same problem!!

Any suggestions what to do??

HI I have the issue with failed to play test tone in usb 2  but if i run these in usb 3 they are fine you have to turn mic down  in megladon  mic sense  but they work on all games i’m running asus p8p67 pro rev 3  mobo  awsome sound  but i notice these games on  use 5.1 surround  in there settings
